This summer, 90 students, faculty and staff from Clearwater Christian College will have the opportunity to travel with the college to Chengdu, the capital of China's southwest Sichuan Province.

Chengdu is renowned for its fertile land and agricultural wealth. The land produces such goods as grain, cooking oil, pork, and vegetables. It covers an area of 3,861 square kilometers, is comprised of five districts and 12 counties, and is known as the "Storehouse of Heaven." Chengdu boasts a total population of 8,873,000 people and was originally built in 316 BC. The province lies in a sub-tropical humid climate, and the Jingiang river flows through the city of Chengdu.

The trip costs $2000 and the students have the once-in-a-lifetime chance to teach conversational English for several hours each day, to Chinese high school students in their junior and senior years. The funds are raised entirely by the students. When not teaching, the students will be able to tour the capital city and the surrounding areas of Sichuan Province.

Mr. Brian Trainer states, "The schedule is very full of activities and opportunities to build Chinese friendships and interact with the culture. We will be eating only Chinese food and learning a little bit of Mandarin while we are there."

Some area attractions include the Wuhou Temple, the Dujiangyang irrigation system, and shopping. The Wuhou Temple covers and area of 3.7 hectares and was built in the memory of a third century prime minister named ZhugeLiang. The Temple boasts 47 statues of Shuhan civil and military officials along with other such noted relics.

The Dujiangyang reaches its 2260th anniversary on April 11. It is the world's oldest irrigation facility and is vital to a large area of the Province. It is located in the southwest portion of the Sichuan Province and its anniversary was a noted event with 10,000 people coming to commemorate the event.

Chengdu is also famous for embroidery, called Chuanxiu. Other such great tourist finds are the Chinese' ability with bamboo ware and their fine tea.
