The CCC soccer team arrived on the field early October 4, in order to prepare mentally and physically for the intense game that awaited them. Three o'clock was the starting time, and promptly at 3:00 p.m. the game began with the starting line-ups.
As the announcer spoke, fans from both sides could feel the tension in the air, it was so thick once could bite right into it. Enthusiasm, nervousness and anticipation were the words that were on everyone's mind and lips as the men walked on the field.
Nathaniel Soncrant, Henry Thompson, and Josh Williams were on defense; Levi Wild and Adam Chambers, the forwards. After a pre-game prayer by Keone Haole, Clearwater was ready. The whistle blew, the game was on.
Within the first 20 minutes of the game, two of Clearwater's players had received yellow cards. Then, in the first ten minutes of the second half, the unthinkable happened: each of those players received another yellow card. They were out for the rest of the game.
Once these two players were removed the Cougar men knew they had a huge job to do, because they had to play with two fewer men on their team for the rest of the game. Clearwater would play against Southeastern with two fewer bodies on the field. The Cougar men took the penalty in stride; they were determined to win.
With about ten minutes left in the second half, the referee awarded Southeastern a penalty kick. CCC goalie Jim Gardner made an amazing save to keep CCC in the game. By not allowing Southeastern to score, the CCC team caused the game to go into overtime. Whoever would score first during the next 20 minutes would win the game.
The final 20 minutes were split into 10 minute halves. The first half of overtime there still was no score, but then in the second half what seemed like a miracle took place.
A beautiful pass made by Keone Haole was given to Ben Kaim, a freshman this year. Ben made an awesome shot, which sailed into the right corner of the goal. Practically all of Clearwater's fans charged the field chanting "CCC" in celebration of victory.
Having two fewer men, Clearwater's win seemed sweet. As Southeastern's coach so aptly stated, "We'll see them again in the regional tournament." The Soccer men and their fans are looking forward to that day.
