This year the men's soccer team had a memorable season. The Cougar's had thirteen new players who joined the 9 returnees from last year.
The season forecasted a strong showing with some solid returnees and promising recruits. On the weekend of November 3-5, the men had the chance to compete for the national championship and display the skills that God gave them.
The first game was on Thursday, November 3 at 4:30 p.m., in which they faced a respected and in some ways feared opponent, for good reason. Their first opponent, Northland Baptist Bible College has been the national championship team for many years in a row, and they always have a strong team to play against.
Thursday proved to be no different. The game was very intense and was viewed by many as the championship game even though it was only the first round.
The Northland Pioneers scored first in the first half of the game. This made the nerves of players and fans alike a little bit shaky, as it is always difficult to be the team who is scored on first.
To the thrill of all of the Clearwater fans and players, Andrew Bates, a senior captain, scored the tying goal with a low rocket that hit the corner of the net. Things started heating up on the field as Clearwater was gaining momentum and Northland was on their heels. As a result, the fouls increased, as did the yellow cards for Northland.
The Cougars had many opportunities in the second half to score, but they were having a hard time finding the goal. It could not have come at a more crucial time when Keoni Haole scored the second goal for Clearwater. While only a freshmen, Keoni proved to be a very valuable asset to the Cougars throughout the entire season.
Clearwater finished the game strong and won the game with the score of 2-1. This win was regarded by many as the best game in Clearwater history. The Cougars did well in the remainder of their games and finished the year in third place in the nation. Although the team was striving to win first place, it was a great finish to a year well-played.
