PENSACOLA, Florida -140 Clearwater Christian College students and staff made their way up to the Panhandle to support their Cougars on February 4.
The basketball match-up between CCC and Pensacola Christian College is an annual event. Every year, over a hundred people drive the grueling 8 hour-trip to witness this game. It is like the Super Bowl of basketball games here at CCC - ironically, it just happened to take place the same weekend as that other big game.
But this year's trip ended in heartbreak, as the Cougars fell to the Eagles 91-76. There was no lack of effort though. CCC hung in the game all the way until the waning moments of the second half.
Led by the aggressive play of sophomore point guard Sergio Negrin, the Cougars played a tight game in the first 20 minutes. By halftime, they were only trailing by 5 points.
Clearwater started the second half with a quick 6-0 run to give them a one-point lead. But after Negrin fouled out in late in the game, the hot shooting from the Eagles proved to be too much in the end.
It didn't help that Clearwater was plagued with injury upon injury. The Cougars were without three of their key players - Michael Hudson, Tony Henton, and Billy Hazelwood - due to the injury bug. Hudson had just rolled his ankle in a game the night before, and was unable to perform.
Although shorthanded and faced with a hostile road environment, the whole team stuck with it. They didn't give up. They played their hearts out, and our fans appreciated that. Both the Cougars and their fans kept a tremendous testimony throughout the contest. Although the game ended in a loss, it was still worth the trip.
We can't wait until next year. The Cougars are ready to come back victorious. And hopefully next year we will see some of those collars flipped back down!
