While most students enjoy CCC basketball games and Friday nights out with friends, a small group of students spend their free time a little differently.

The cast of this year's spring play, "Seven Keys to Baldpate," has already begun the rehearsal and production process. The play, written by George M. Cohan in 1913, was made into a feature film five times, including two silent films, the first with Cohan himself.

The story was written as a mystery novel in 1910 by Earl Derr Biggers, who later wrote all the old Charlie Chan mysteries your parents or grandparents probably read.

The play is being directed by Dr. Robert Cundiff, the chair of the Communication Arts department, who has directed many past productions.

The 15-member cast rehearses four days a week. For some, that means a ten-hour sacrifice per week. Although the production is still in its early stages, Dr. Cundiff says that he is pleased with the progress the cast is making thus far. Assistant Stage Manager Jennifer Bolan said, "I'm surprised at how much work goes into making a production."

"Seven Keys to Baldpate" is a comedy/melodrama. Novelist Billy Magee makes a wager with a friend that he can write a novel in 24 hours. He is given the only key to the deserted Baldpate Inn in the dead of winter to write his novel, but there are seven other people who claim ownership to the only key, including thugs, a blackmailer, a crazy hermit, a mystery woman, a damsel in distress, a crooked mayor and sheriff. What happens at the Inn? "Come and see for yourself," said director Cundiff.

Cast member Jared Williams said, "I think the audience will enjoy the play, and hopefully, may spark others to consider being in the cast or crew of future productions."

The show will be performed at CCC from March 28-31. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students. Tickets go on sale February 14. The telephone number for ordering tickets and for more information, is 727-726-1153 ext. 0.
