Although many interns are not hired full time, interning is a first opportunity to gain experience preferred by employers in the workforce.
Dave Doughty, a senior General Studies major, has a focus in Communication Arts. Interested in radio production, Doughty hopes to work for a radio station after graduation. This semester he is interning ten hours a week at Salem Communications in Tampa. Salem operates WTBN, a Christian talk station, and WGUL AM 860, a secular talk station.
"So far my responsibilities include operating the console and equipment for program shows, said Doughty. "Some days I run the console for a live show called 'Community in Touch.' I 'cue in' the host and put commercials on the air. On other days, I operate the telephone lines, add information to the web site and do little jobs here and there."
Dr. Robert Cundiff, chair of the CCC Communication Arts department, guided Doughty to Salem and assisted Doughty in obtaining the position. Said Cundiff, "Dave has an interest in radio--a field I worked in myself for six or seven years--and I was happy to see him get the internship at Salem. It will give Dave some tremendous 'real-world' radio experience."
"The best part is the live show," Doughty said. "It is tough to do and lots to keep up with, but it gives me a challenge and helps me learn the 'behind the scenes' of radio. I have made friends and all the employees are really nice and respect me."
Doughty said the Salem internship has been a great privilege which he has enjoyed.
