With the election season in full swing, almost everyone is taking the right to vote seriously. For students, becoming involved in politics can be exciting. The Political Club at CCC provides an organization for those students to be involved.

Sponsor, Mr. Brian Johnson, invites anybody to join. Johnson explains the original political club was started as a club for Republicans.

"The Political Club was actually organized years ago and was always a conservative club. It was called the Republican Club of CCC. A few years ago, we realized that permission was never "officially" given from the Republican Party to use their name. We could have received that permission, but we decided to become the Political Club. This gave us the freedom to endorse the more conservative candidate in a Republican primary election."

During election time, the club is most active. Students have attended rallies, while others have gone to hear some of the candidates speak. Club members can sometimes be seen waving campaign signs along McMullen Booth Road.

"Some of the members went to see John McCain, when he spoke at a rally in Tampa. A couple of students drove up to Ocala to see Sarah Palin, when she spoke at The Villages. Several other students were able to attend the Palin rally at Coachman Park in Clearwater. We also had around 30 students who held up McCain and Congressman Bilirakis signs at the intersection of Drew and McMullen-Booth.

Currently. several students are paid by the Republican Party to walk precincts. Once the election is over, the club will rest," according to Mr. Johnson.

Anybody can join this club, and there are no dues required to pay in order to be a member.

"I have often been asked how to become a member of the club. If students attend a meeting or show any interest at all in the club, they are considered members," said Mr. Johnson.
